A toast of the mug to a local coffee company Thursday night.
PT's Coffee Roasting Company was recently named 2009 Macro Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine.
The Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce threw them an open house reception to celebrate the honor.
Co-owner Fred Polzin says the company started with a small shop at SW 29th and Arrowhead in 1993. It has grown to a facility at Forbes Industrial Park where it roasts and ships beans wholesale to clients around the globe.
Polzin says the more he and co-owner Jeff Taylor learned about beans and roasting and the product, the more they grew into something bigger than they ever intended.
Polzin says the company travels to the source locations for its beans. They say it's made them committed to giving back to those communities. For example, they've given soccer uniforms and medical supplies to a community in El Salvador. He says he believes people are willing to pay a little more for a quality product, especially if they know it's benefiting those who produced it.
