Ruben Vega's farm spans three hectares, two of which are dedicated to coffee production. His journey into the world of coffee production began 12 years ago, when he took over management of the property inherited from his family. This legacy prompted Vega to maintain the land and replant gesha saplings, which now number about 4,500.
A decline in selling prices and increasing costs of production have been concerns in recent years, as well as the variable climate that complicates raising saplings, since Vega does not have an irrigation system in place. Nevertheless, his optimism and commitment have achieved great results.
Ruben's gesha was processed at Creativa Coffee District's state-of-the-art facility near Boquete (pictured above). CCD's "Splash" method begins with a 14-hour anaerobic fermentation with the cherries intact, followed by depulping and a second 74-hour fermentation in which the mucilage is allowed to oxidize. After washing away the remaining fermented mucilage, the parchment coffee dries on a patio for about 29 days until it reaches a moisture content of 10.3%.
Blue Label coffees may be available in 50g jars, 4oz pouches, or 8oz pouches, depending on coffee inventory and cost. These coffees are available whole bean only.
